My Honest Review of the Mecca Max New Primers (Swatches Included)

Mecca Max extended their affordable in house makeup line recently with three new primers. Coming in at $25AUD for 30ml of product, it was a much welcomed extension and update to their line up.

Swatches of the Skin Filter Blurring Primer

The Skin Filter Blurring Primer is true to it’s name, providing a gentle blur and soft matte finish to the skin. Thankfully it doesn’t feel coating or heavy, applies smoothly over the skin and has a subtle texture blurring effect.

I enjoyed this isn’t as far as the Smashbox Photo Finish level of blurring primer (if you know, you know!) that has a heavier silicone feel, and has a more specific time, place and finish.

This Mecca Max option felt appropriate to use everyday and was comfortable on the skin.

I know what you’re thinking, the swatch looks more glowy than the dewy primer we’re about to have a look at- that’s because I applied slightly more of the Blurring Primer, the way it’s catching the light, and it does sit on the skin more than the Dew Over primer that my forearm promptly drank up!

Dew Over Hydrating Primer

Swatches of the Dew Over Hydrating Primer

The Dew Over primer is light and not greasy at all. It provided a simple, plush texture on the arm that almost disappeared into nothing.

It’s not as juicy as I’d expect a Dewy primer to be, and maybe for the best!

Mecca Max is aimed at the younger age group (teens through to mid 20s) and often people that prefer Dew have their glow in multiple steps- so I don’t mind that the primer isn’t packing a super dewy punch- it is a primer, after all.

There’s no iridescence and it’s a fairly simple, no frills primer. In the line up, this is probably the one you can skip, as I found it didn’t do much more than what my SPF did for me during the AM.

Bring On Bright Illuminating Primer

Swatches of the Bring It On Bright Illuminating Primer

The Bring On Bright Primer was the one I got to do a bit of a deeper dive on, as it was also the one that intrigued me the most (video also linked below).

As with all the other primers and many of the Mecca Max picks, they’re best applied with hands. They have a strong “carefree” approach and lighter textures throughout the range to suit the age bracket that most buys them.

This primer is no exception, as the formula got drank up a but by the bristles.

I applied a generous amount, more than I thought it’d need, as it isn’t as hydrating as it’s glowy counterparts on the market. I didn’t mind at all!

I thought the pearl like finish was absolutely stunning, it had no visible shimmer particles or glitter chunks, felt very smooth and pleasant to apply.

It layered wonderfully with the makeup I applied after too, which is sometimes a worry with lighter primers that can have the tendency to pill when forming a film on the skin.

This primer gave me the closest feeling to glass skin I’ve had with a primer, without the heavier feeling some primers have.

When linking the product for the article I did notice it was the primer of the bunch to have 4.5 Stars with 80+ reviews, which is a positive sign that the love for this one is consensus.

Summing up

I really enjoy how these primers are simple and basic, made to mesh well with other picks. Sometimes I find primers overwhelming or unnecessary, because they’re often trying to me lots of things (skincare, foundation, spf etc etc) but I’m enjoying the fact that these primers are basic and to the point of what they do.

I’ve gifted on the Dew Over and Blurring Primer to people who will enjoy them more, and will keep the Illuminating primer in my stash to use on days I want a lit from within glow without the heaviness.

I think this will be especially appreciated in the coming warmer months.

Which primer do you think you’d best like? Do you have any Holy Grail picks from Mecca Max? Let me know below in the comments!
